A few months ago, a new coffee house opened just steps from my studio on Bar Yochai Street: Coffee Lane. After eighteen years mastering specialty coffee in Melbourne, Tomer Gian returned to Israel and founded it together with his brother Avihai, who led the clean, striking design of the space.
Working next door to one another made a collaboration feel natural. Tomer and Avihai were roasting coffee with the same precision and care that I bring to shaping porcelain, and it wasn't long before we started talking about what it would look like to bring our two crafts together.
The result is a collection of four smooth porcelain cups - Sahar, Luna, Nadin, and Hila - each shaped for a different way of drinking coffee:
Luna - for morning coffee and cold drinks
Sahar - for macchiato, lungo, and double espresso
Nadin - for Americano and long black
Hila - for piccolo latte
Each set pairs one of my hand-painted cups with Coffee Lane's beans, so the coffee and the cup it's served in were, in a small way, made for each other.
It's a project I love for a simple reason: it came from proximity, not planning. From two studios a few doors apart, from beans to cup, from one craft meeting another.
